1) Welcome and Introduction.
The BIHA team and myself (Mark Jerram) would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year. I have tried to make this alert similar to the old-style BIHA newsletters. Some older members will recognize the return of some previous topics e.g. “Spot-light on a hire company”, which many of you enjoy reading. This will hopefully be continued in future alerts.
It is great news that PL insurance costs are coming down. This is partly thanks to the new PIPA scheme which is now a reality (Please see section 4 of this alert).
The BIHA webmaster (Mark Stevens) broke his collar-bone 2 days after Christmas (He fell down some stairs while shopping in the London sales). He is recouperating in London, and, as a result there has been a slight back-log of work for the data-base showing member’s free listings on www.biha.org.uk and also www.leisurescene.com I am expecting him back in the office sometime next month.
I was greatly saddened by the news of the tsunami disaster on Boxing Day. The BIHA web-designer – Rob Graham, had a friend in Thailand who went missing for a couple of days – fortunately he was found alive and well.
It was tragic that an early tsunami warning system was not in place in the Indian Ocean like it had been in the Pacific Ocean for the last 20 years. Someone on the news said that for the cost of a couple of million dollars they could have had a warning system set up which could have saved countless lives. Now apparently, the funds have been made available to prevent a repeat of the boxing day tragedy. There are lessons to be learnt here not just for the world but for our individual lives and our businsses.
2) Second-hand inflatables for sale.
Please see below the latest second-hand inflatables being sold by BIHA members. If any member is interested in advertising their second-hand inflatables to nearly 1,300 BIHA members (completely free of charge), please email me at mark.jerram@ntlworld.com (Don't forget to always include your town and county area, so that potential buyers can work out how far they must travel to view your second-hand inflatable before they enquire. If you are looking at a second-hand unit, always check carefully the condition of the bed seams and also the stress points. If you are not sure what to look out for when assessing the condition of a second-hand inflatable - try and take someone with you who is experienced. (Please note that the BIHA cannot be held responsible for the quality of the second-hand inflatables advertised in this alert, so please be vigilant).

4) PIPA NEWS (Including some comments from Mark Jerram).
On Wednesday of last week (12/01/05) I attended another PIPA committee meeting at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. It was the sixth such meeting I have attended and it was good to see that the PIPA scheme is making very positive progress and there are now 41 PIPA inspectors throughout the UK. Please click on: www.pipa.org.uk/findInsp.asp The list of these inspectors (and the inspection bodies which they represent) will shortly be going up on the BIHA website and in a BIHA news alert in the very near future. Also see: www.pipa.org.uk and www.ipis.org.uk
One important point which was emphasized at this meeting was that the new PIPA scheme currently only applies to bouncy castles, inflatable slides and bouncy castles which take balls, or have “biff n bash” etc. On the other hand, if the inflatable comes under the category of “games” or “wet”….then it is beyond the scope of the PIPA scheme. However, a “game” or “wet” inflatable should still be tested annually by a competent tester (to ensure all PM76 requirements are met and a risk-assessment carried out) and a certificate issued to show any interested parties e.g. local authorities, HSE and insurance companies.
In order to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, bouncy castles and inflatable slides should be PIPA tested and tagged before 1st October 2005. Currently, the only testing scheme that the HSE support is the PIPA scheme. The BIHA strongly recommend that to avoid the inevitable last-minute rush, that members don’t wait till the last minute but get their castles and slides PIPA tested ASAP. Throughout 2005, all the remaining local authorities in the UK (who are not yet familiar with PIPA) will be informed that PIPA is the only HSE approved scheme. Most local authorities will only allow childrens’ play inflatables on their land (e.g. for school fetes and fund-raising) if the operator can produce a valid PIPA certificate and tagged inflatable.
If you have any questions about PIPA (Although many of them have already been answered on the industry message board and elsewhere), please email me at mark.jerram@ntlworld.com
If I do not know the answer, I will forward your e-mail to an inspector in your area, another PIPA committee member or the whole committee.
N.B. “Games” inflatables refer to those that are usually used by adults only e.g. bungee run, large, adult obstacle course.
“Wet” inflatables refer to specialized types of play inflatables which are used on water (Mainly large indoor swimming pools).
Both “Games” and “wet” inflatables do NOT come under the scope of the PIPA scheme, but should still be tested annually by a competent inspector to PM76 standards and risk assessed.
Important Point: As well as complying with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. The PIPA scheme (for childrens’ inflatables) and testing scheme for “Games” and “Wet” inflatables is helping to bring our PL insurance premiums down.
Please Note: PIPA is NOT Law, it is "Best Practice". For more up-to-date comments on PIPA, see the February 2005 Newsletter. Please visit www.biha.org.uk/news/alert34/index.html.
Some of my comments about PIPA.
Also, PIPA will help to bring more “level pegging” to our industry. How many times have you lost a £50 booking for say a 12ft x 12ft bouncy castle to a new “competitor” who is charging £25 or £30 per day.
PIPA is helping to increase the professionalism of our industry, and will, over time, make it more and more difficult for a hire company to start up and charge ridiculously low prices for its castles, and taking away business from reputable and well established hire businesses.
It is my firm belief that when PIPA becomes well known by the public, (Not just local authorities and the public sector), then the respect for our industry will increase and all operators with PIPA tested units, will be able to put their hire prices up (even if initially, it’s only £5 per hire, it is a starting point).
For too long, I believe, many operators have been under-pricing the hire charge for their inflatables (not helped by the new “start-ups” who sometimes charge £25 per day “beer money”).
So many times (over the last 12 years), I have delivered a 12 x 12 bouncy castle to a party (for say £55 for ALL DAY) to find that the customer also had a childrens’ entertainer for just TWO HOURS, and was charged £100 for the privilege!
I believe PIPA is a powerful tool to demonstrate to the public and corporate bodies that we take our businesses (and the safety of the children) very seriously and because of that we should be better rewarded.
It is also very good news to see insurance companies lowering their premiums in the light of the new PIPA scheme.
To sum up: PIPA may cost the average operator slightly more money in terms of testing and tagging. However, this is more than compensated by the increased professionalism, higher safety standards, lower PL insurance costs, and hopefully increased hire charges in the not too distant future.
For more information please refer to www.pipa.org.uk and especially www.pipa.org.uk/findInsp.asp
5) Real Life Hire Stories (Formally known as “Hirings from Hell”)
This first true story was kindly emailed to the BIHA by a member. (Name withheld).
1) I did a hire for the guides for a fun day they were having in October 2004, I delivered them one of my new 15'x15’ castles with shower cover in case of rain that day.
On the day it did rain so the event was moved indoors but the castle had to stay out because of the ceiling size. They hired it from 1pm - 4p.m. It was up and running by 12.45p.m then I left expecting to return about 3.45pm.
I got back to the unit around 3.15pm to collect another castle and was told they wanted early uplift because of poor attendance. As I arrived to pick up the castle there were loads of kids playing football in the rain. To my horror they were using my castle as the goals, one was even on it with his football boots on. I went ballistic grabbed the kid with the boots on and chucked him off the castle, which by now was covered in mud and torn on the base.
I went into the centre to confront the hirer only to be told they left 1 hour before I arrived.
After many phone calls to the hirer I got her mother, the girl I thought was about 19yrs old turned out to be 15 and was in charge of the castle. The guides refused any compensation saying the girl was acting on her own and not with their permission.
I was left well out of pocket by the whole thing, and the last kick in the ass I got was the police reporting me to the p.f for assault on a 15 year old boy. WHAT A DAY THAT WAS!!
P.S The p.f said there was no case to answer because no one saw me throw him off the castle but my co-worker - he doesn’t see very well though - phew!
2) The following true story took place at a school fete during the long, hot summer of 2003.
A child suffered a minor injury on a large children’s slide. (A bruise on their thigh). Unfortunately, one of the teachers panicked and dialled “999”. By pure coincidence, there was a paramedic helicopter flying past. Anyway, the helicopter pilot was radioed by the ambulance service, who made an emergency landing next to the slide. Unfortunately, the powerful rotor-wash from the whirring blades of the helicopter (as it landed), almost blew the slide over (while there were children still on it). It was only due to the fact that it was well staked down that a potential tragedy was avoided. Also, several gazebos were completely blown away and destroyed.
This story was mentioned in the local press.
Moral: Always ensure your slides are well staked down. It could be a calm day, but you never know if a helicopter could tip it.
If other members have experienced a “Real life hire story” or a “hiring from hell”, please could you email me at mark.jerram@ntlworld.com and I will include them in the next alert going out shortly. There are usually valuable lessons to be learnt from these types of incidents.

7) Amusing & daft questions asked by customers:
- “HOW BIG IS A 12ft X12ft BOUNCY CASTLE?”
- “WILL IT FIT IN MY GARDEN, I STAY AT .........?”
- “HOW MANY CHILDREN WILL FIT ON IT”
- “CAN I PICK IT UP TO SAVE ON DELIVERY CHARGE.”
- “IS IT OK IF MY PET DOG PLAYS ON THE BOUNCY CASTLE WITH THE KIDS?”.
- “SURELY ONCE IT HAS BLOWN UP YOU CAN SWITCH BLOWER OFF TO SAVE ON MY ELECTRIC BILL”.
- “PLEASE DON’T BANG THOSE STAKES IN TOO HARD – IT MAY DAMAGE MY LAWN!”
- (12’ x 12’ bouncer at a party for 4 year olds). “CAN WE HAVE THE CASTLE TILL MIDNIGHT PLEASE!”
- “THE CASTLE IS NOT AS BIG AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE”….. I am sorry madam, how big did you expect a 15ft x 15ft bouncy castle to be. “I DON’T KNOW!!
- IT’S A BIT HOT IN THIS HALL – DO YOU HAVE A SPARE BLOWER WE CAN USE AS A FAN TO COOL US DOWN?.
- “I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE CASTLE”….. That’s not the castle madam, that’s the crash-mat!
- This happened to a friend of mine back in 1993 at the end of a day’s hire. “I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY YOU ANY MONEY FOR THE BOUNCY CASTLE LUV, BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO COME UPSTAIRS WITH ME………” My friend wisely walked away!!!
8) SPOTLIGHT ON A HIRE COMPANY - Steven Leishman. (Hop-on Bouncy Castle Hire)
BIHA: Can you tell us a bit about yourself.
Stephen: My name is Steven Leishman. I am from Irvine in the west coast of Scotland married to Elaine with one child daughter Emma 10 yrs old. I enjoy hill walking, camping and most outdoor life. I have been married for 13 yrs and in this business for 4 yrs.
B: How did you get into the inflatable hire business?
S: I got into the inflatable hire business because of my brother and my naivity. He hired out a bouncy castle for his 5 yr old daughter and as we all sat looking - he said £45 for 20 minutes work, that guy must be rolling in it!!
I was offered redundancy and took it from J. Menzies distribution and decided to buy a few castles to make easy money, boy it taught me never listen to your brother and if it looks too good to be true then it is.
B: What is your favourite type of inflatable?
S: My favourite type of inflatable is the giant slide type, I don't have one at the moment but I am shopping around for one. I think if you run it properly with good supervision of two people then you can have a calm day compared to private parties.
B: What do you like best about the business?
S: The thing I like best about the business, is being involved in people’s parties if they book a castle for their child’s party it is a big investment for them. I enjoy making it go as smoothly as possible for them, and if they are happy, I'm happy.
B: What do you least like about the business?
S: I think the worst part of my business has to be ungrateful parents, or the disrespect of my equipment. I always used to give out small inflatables e.g. guitars, boats, books etc. However, I stopped when after a year of doing this, I calculated that 80% of people didn’t say thank you, 10% of them burst the inflatable toys and left them lying around and the other 10% said “oh thanks”.
I won't even go into the disrespect my equipment received, all hirers get it, so you know what I mean.
One major problem, I am at the moment trying to solve is to show people in my area about booking their school fetes etc. through me. I have only recently found out why I have difficulty in getting my local fetes gala days etc.
I have been told by one gala committee member that the show people have told them if they book a local person to supply them with a castle then they will give them nothing for their gala ie: no kiddie rides, no candy floss, no hot dog stall etc. So if I turn up with a castle that’s all they will get, but if they book from the showmans guild they get everything, bribery or what eh!!
I would like to ask BIHA members to pass on any bad hirers to your competitors if necessary to avoid people thinking they can do what they like with your equipment, if they find out they can't get a castle because of their attitude it could help to change things.
B: Do you have any ideas, hints or tips to help the other members?
S: The only idea or tip that I have is to hope that one day after someone books a castle from me I can access a database of bad hirers in Scotland or in my area and judge whether or not to cancel them before my equipment gets damaged or mistreated.
B: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
In five years from now, I see myself with more staff, more equipment and lots more local fetes, galas etc. I started with 2 castles, I now have 11 units with more to come. So profit will be a big thing for me in 2005.
B: How has the BIHA helped your business?
S: The BIHA has been great for my business, not only the logo and the name, but the benefit of contacting others in the industry and the help I have received from the BIHA.
B:Any other comments?
S: Only comments, I can make are to hope every one of you has a great year and your profits soar and you get the respect the industry deserves, and may the BIHA grow as it has year after year.
Best regards
Stevie

9) Hints and Tips
- Make sure that you label all your equipment with your contact details (especially blowers and extension cables).
- A good way of storing safety mats in your hi-top van is to create a false ceiling.
- Some e-mail filters unfortunately swallow up genuine emails (e.g. from customers trying to book an inflatable!). Try and use an e-mail filter which allows you to view the emails before they are permanently deleted.
- If you find (during the season) that you are getting more bookings than you can cope with, a good source of labour is fit and healthy OAP’s. They usually have lots of free time, need the money and are often available at a moments notice.
- During the winter months join a gym or similar to get as fit as possible for the busy summer season ahead.
- Get your old diaries out (esp. for 2004 and 2003) and write or ring up all your old customers and book them in for the coming season. All their children have birthday parties and an inflatable is the perfect entertainment.
- If you can justify the cost, buy an in-car satellite navigation system (3D ones are best). They cost around £450 but your job of finding customer’s premises will be made much easier, and less time consuming.
- Always carry a minor repair kit, a roll of duct tape and a household stapler in your van. These are useful onsite emergency repairs.
- Always carry a spare groundsheet and a spare extension cable (at least 30m). Experience shows that these are the things that you are most likely to forget for a booking.
- Some operators write a list of all the equipment which they need for a booking and then attach it to their dash-board. (This makes sure they never forget an item).
You can see more hints and tips at the special BIHA report given out to all BIHA members. Please see: www.biha.org.uk/inflatedprofits.htm
10) Changes to the BIHA website..
Most of you will by now have noticed that the BIHA website is going through a major renovation at the moment. A new link which should be created shortly from the site is for “Products & Services offered by BIHA members” e.g. One of our members sells safety mats to inflatable hire companies.
If you sell any products or services which you feel the other members could benefit from (not necessarily directly connected to the inflatable hire industry) – please email me at mark.jerram@ntlworld.com. If appropriate, this advertising may be free of charge for you.
If you have any suggestions or comments or constructive criticism about the re-vamping of the BIHA website, please could you e-mail me…..Thanks.
11) Lapsed Memberships.
A small percentage of BIHA memberships have lapsed. If you are in this category, you will shortly be receiving an application form to apply for the renewal of your membership. If your membership has lapsed because you have come out of the industry – please accept our apologies and ignore this postal reminder.
12) Please read if you are a non-member of the BIHA.
